‘It’s a real problem’: B.C. election integrity doubters fuel online backlash [Video]

FORT ST. JOHN –The prospect of an NDP victory sparked online backlash this week, with a number of social media posts questioning the integrity of the electoral process.

“It’s a real problem, I think, facing our democracies that we’re calling into question the integrity of our elections and the legitimacy of our elections, but often with no real evidence that they’re flawed,” said Dr. Gary Wilson, Political Science Professor and Chair at the University of British Columbia.

Hundreds of posts raised concerns about the number of mail-in and absentee votes, their origins, the wait time between counts, and how they were handled.

Wilson says this could in part be the result of the “Trumpification” of American politics spilling into Canada.

“In the vast majority of cases, maybe all cases, there’s no evidence to suggest there is any tampering or there’s some kind of grand conspiracy to sway elections,” Wilson …
