Newly minted federal Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said the Canadian automotive sector is under “immense pressure” from tariffs being imposed by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Joly, speaking with reporters in Toronto Thursday following a visit to GM’s Oshawa Assembly plant (as well as Ontario Tech University) earlier in the day, said a major part of her new role is to work with the Canadian auto sector on the “consequences” of tariffs on automotive jobs in this country.

Joly said her government is negotiating “as we speak” with the Trump administration in Washington and that she has met with automotive executives in Oshawa (GM), Alliston (Honda) and Windsor (Stellantis) about preserving Canadian jobs.

“We’re working with the auto sector in Canada to make sure we could find a way to protect the jobs in a sector that is really, really affected.”
