BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A leader in Jefferson County is working to ensure that teachers receive their pay twice a month. Representative Ontario Tillman has pre-filed a bill aimed at improving the retention and recruitment of teachers across the state.
Having spent 10 years as a teacher, Tillman understands the importance of timely pay for educators, especially for first-year teachers or those starting in new school systems.
“You start school in August, work for roughly 2-3 weeks, and then need to work the entire month of September before you see your first paycheck. That means you can go close to two months without receiving any income,” Tillman explains.
This is just one reason he advocates for teachers receiving pay twice a month. Tillman has also looked at states like Tennessee and Georgia, which already pay teachers this way and are actively recruiting educators to Alabama.
