Kristy Somerville-Midgette discusses the approach she will bring to her role as the next superintendent of Lynchburg City Schools.

The Lynchburg City School Board appointed Kristy Somerville-Midgette as the division’s next superintendent in an 8-1 vote Tuesday evening.

Somerville-Midgette, who has served as division superintendent for Brunswick County Public Schools since 2018, will begin her role July 1.

“It is truly an incredible honor to be here before you tonight as your next superintendent for Lynchburg City Schools,” Somerville-Midgette said.

District 3 board member Farid Jalil voted against Somerville-Midgette’s approval. He did not attend candidate interviews due to a previous commitment, but said he thinks “there’s a lot of good that will come from this decision.”

School Board Vice Chair Martin Day said the board was very quick to identify Somerville-Midgette as its top candidate.
