Around 80 percent of Maine’s heating fuel and gasoline is imported from Canada, according to a statement by Gov. Janet Mills.

MAINE, USA — With sweeping tariffs directed at Canada, Mexico, and China now in place, leaders of Maine’s energy sector are weighing in on potential impacts to customers’ bills. 

Maine currently shares an electricity grid with New Brunswick, importing hundreds of thousands of megawatts of energy every year, according to the Maine Office of Energy. 

Leaders at the Maine Public Utilities Commission say while it’s still unclear if electricity running into Maine from Canada will be tariffed, natural gas used to generate electricity is likely to affect pricing. 

“It’s complicated. It’s never been done here in New England, so I think we’re still trying to figure it out,” Chairman Philip Bartlett said. “I think have a lot more questions than answers.”
