Lethbridge celebrates National Indigenous People’s Day | Brett Browne l Bridge City News

Aired on: Friday, June 21st, 2024

Events were held throughout Lethbridge June 21 to celebrate National Indigenous People’s Day. One of the biggest gatherings was at Galt Gardens where indigenous and community groups marked the event with an opening ceremony, entertainment, and a free community lunch. Indigenous groups set up tee pees in the park and there were information booths from a wide variety of community groups.
City of Lethbridge indigenous relations specialist, Echo Nowak, says National Indigenous People’s Day is not only an opportunity to celebrate the history and culture of our Indigenous community but to work together toward reconciliation.
Along with the celebrations at Galt Gardens National Indigenous People’s Day was celebrated with events at Fort Whoop Up and the Lethbridge Public Library. In addition, a new Metis flag was hoisted along Metis Trail and local artists were encouraged to submit designs for the city’s orange shirt to be featured during Truth and Reconciliation week in the fall.
