The White House’s new executive order targets lower drug prices, but may strain small independent pharmacies financially.

ODESSA, Texas — A new executive order from the White House could bring major changes to independent pharmacies across the Permian Basin. While the move is aimed at lowering prescription drug prices for Americans, some small business owners worry it could lead to new financial challenges for locally-owned pharmacies.

The order, known as the “most favored nation” directive, pushes drug manufacturers to offer the U.S. the lowest prices they provide globally — matching what countries like Canada and the U.K. pay for the same medications.

Andrew Prado, pharmacist and vice president at Town & Country Drug in Odessa, said the move may look good on paper, but it could worsen the economic strain already felt by smaller pharmacies.
