Mr Carney, who formerly served as the head of Canada’s central bank, had become the front-runner after President Trump placed tariffs on his nation.

Taking 85.9 per cent of the vote, he said during his victory speech: “Donald Trump, as we know, has put unjustified tariffs on what we build, on what we sell and how we make a living.

“He’s attacking Canadian families, workers and businesses and we cannot let him succeed and we won’t.”

In January, Mr Trudeau announced his resignation after receiving numerous requests to resign from his own MPs.

As the cost of food and housing increased, the 53-year-old’s popularity had decreased. He will remain in his position until Mr Carney takes office.
