AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) – The Maine Tourism Association hosted an ice cream social on Tuesday for lawmakers in Augusta. At the event, they spoke on the importance and reliance of tourism within the state of Maine.

They say the total economic impact of the industry is nearly 15 billion dollars with nearly 15 million visitors annually.

They did comment on concerns with Canadian visitors this upcoming season. This comes with concerns tariffs against the country may have turned some regular visitors away from vacationing in the United States.

The Maine Tourism Association stated that Canada accounts for about five percent of the total tourists and while some communities may feel the change harder than others, they still have hope for a profitable year.

“We want to make sure that everyone feels welcomed here in the state of Maine and we want to break down any barriers that there might be,” …
