Man dead after falling through ice on Ontario lake [Video]

A 59-year-old Milton man is dead after falling through ice in the Muskoka area.

Huntsville Ontario Provincial Police say they responded to a call for a man who had gone through the ice on Lake of Bays, near Baxter Lane in Algonquin Highlands Township, last Saturday.

Police say that witnesses told officers the man had been on the ice retrieving stakes before he was found floating in the water. He was brought to shore and lifesaving measures were performed until paramedics arrived.

The man could not be revived and he was pronounced dead.

Police say the incident is not considered suspicious at this time.

“Every year, needless preventable tragedies occur on our area water and ice surfaces which could have been avoided, and emergency services are counting on you to make that decision to stay OFF the ICE,” police said in a news release.
