A man has died following a stabbing in downtown Hamilton on Sunday afternoon, prompting a murder investigation and the involvement of Ontario’s police watchdog.

In a social media post shortly after 6 p.m., Hamilton police said officers responded to a 911 call near the Corktown neighbourhood, in the area of Hunter Street and Spring Street, where they found a man with stab wounds. He later died from his injuries. Police did not say whether he was pronounced dead at the scene or in hospital.

Police say they had an interaction with a suspect at the scene, prompting Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit to invoke its mandate. The SIU  is an agency that investigates cases involving police where death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault occur.

No further details about the victim or suspect have been released.
