Man wanted for sexual assaults, ‘inappropriate’ touching of child in Ontario arrested [Video]

A Whitby man wanted in connection with two sexual assaults in Durham Region earlier this year – one involving a nine-year-old child – has been arrested and police are concerned there may be more victims.

Durham Regional Police said a man was visiting with friends in Clarington in January and is alleged to have touched a nine-year-old child in an “inappropriate manner.”

The same man is accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a residence in Whitby in February while she was sleeping and again outside at his car.

On Wednesday, officers from Central East Division arrested Jared Mercieca, 35, without incident.

Mercieca is charged with sexual interference with a child; two counts of sexual assault, assault causing bodily harm; choking; uttering death threats and dangerous operation.

He was held for a bail hearing.
