A swath of Manitoba is under an extreme cold warning Monday as temperatures ready to plummet overnight.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued the warnings for much of southwestern Manitoba, including for Brandon, Minnedosa, Virden, and Riding Mountain National Park.

According to the government agency, a period of very cold wind chills are expected thanks to an arctic ridge of high pressure presiding over the region.

Temperatures nearing -30 C are expected to combine with westerly winds to create extreme wind chills overnight and into Tuesday morning.

ECCC said temperatures will moderate through the day Tuesday as a low pressure system crosses through northern Manitoba.

The agency reminds the public that extreme cold puts everyone at risk, and those spending time outside should dress warmly and watch for cold-related symptoms.
