Measles exposure at school and hospital confirmed in an Ontario city [Video]

A child has tested positive for measles and public health officials are investigating after a school and hospital were exposed to the virus in Hamilton.

Hamilton Public Health Services confirmed the positive case of measles in a Hamilton child on Friday, saying residents may have been exposed to the virus at both the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Elementary School and McMaster Children’s Hospital Emergency Department over the last two weeks.

The highly-contagious infection of the lungs can spread easily to those who are not fully vaccinated against measles or who have not previously had measles, the health service says.

Infants under one year of age, people who are pregnant and people with weakened immune systems “are at an increased risk of complications,” Hamilton Public Health Services says.
