Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has named a Mississauga MP as Canada’s Special Envoy for Syria.
Omar Alghabra, who has served as a Member of Parliament in the riding of Mississauga Centre since 2015, will now be Canada’s liaison with Syria as it transitions towards a new government following the fall of the Assad regime.
Alghabra has already announced he will not be running in the next federal election.
As a Special Envoy, Alghabra will advise the Canadian government on efforts to support the Syrian people in addressing their needs and transitioning to a new government.

According to the prime minister’s office, to do this, Alghabra will consult with a range of stakeholders in the Middle Eastern country, including subject matter experts, regional actors, and international partners, to promote inclusive governance and ensure the protection of human rights.
