Mohawk Council of Akwesasne Election Results Set Aside [Video]

Residents of Akwesasne may soon find themselves voting again, as the Akwesasne Election Appeal Board has invalidated the results of the recent Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) general election. The board reviewed 19 appeals, with 14 deemed valid, citing violations that potentially impacted the election outcome, including issues with the voters’ list and election processes. The MCA, which governs the Canadian section of Akwesasne, has seen these elections happen every three years, with the latest results showing Edward Roundpoint narrowly winning the position of grand chief. However, if the appeal board’s decision remains unchallenged within five days, it will be final, leading to a new election for the grand chief and district chiefs. Former grand chief Abram Benedict stepped down after nine years to take a new role as regional chief for the Chiefs of Ontario.
