TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – As the ice continues to develop on Lake Erie and other waterways in the area, some of you may be planning to have some fun this weekend. But, whether it’s ice skating, ice fishing, or pond hockey, you need to be extremely careful.
The Arctic blast we just went through has caused most of Lake Erie to become ice-covered, so it’s a good time to remind yourself that NO ice, is safe ice.
Ice has developed rapidly across all five Great Lakes. While most of Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Ontario remain ice-free outside the bays and shallow areas, 86% of Lake Erie was covered in ice as of Thursday afternoon. There’s still a little open water in the eastern basin near Buffalo, but most of the western basin has frozen over.
