New Hampshire Fish and Game called the rescue a “herculean task,” with rescuers potentially saving the hiker’s life.

THOMPSON AND MESERVE’S PURCHASE, N.H. — Rescue crews braved severe weather conditions to get a Mount Washington hiker to safety on Saturday.

William Tessier, 29, of Carignan, Quebec City, was descending the mountain around 3:45 p.m. after summiting it with four other hikers when he slipped and fell in icy conditions, causing him to slide several feet off the Jewell Trail and strike an object, New Hampshire Fish and Game said in a press release. It happened not far from Mt. Clay, officials said.

Tessier called 911 for help, prompting conservation officers, volunteers from Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue (AVSAR), Pemigewassett Valley Search & Rescue (PEMI SAR), and Mountain Rescue Services (MRS) to respond.
