N.S. news: MACPASS hard-shell transition delayed [Video]

One day before Halifax Harbour Bridges (HHB) was scheduled to phase out the hard-shell MACPASS, the organization has announced an indefinite delay to the transition.

On its website, HHB said customers will still be able to use hard-shell transponders. The organization was originally set to fully replace the hard-shells with stickers on Tuesday, but that transition has been postponed with “no new deadline.”

The organization told CTV News Atlantic it delayed the transition due to the Nova Scotia governmen’ts promise to remove tolls from the MacKay and Macdonald bridges, a move that’s expected to cost roughly $40 million.

HHB originally announced the switch in May. The hard-shells were introduced more than 25 years ago. The sticker transponders came into effect three years ago.

The commission originally said deactivated hard-shells can be recycled by giving them to bridge attendants, dropping them off at special bins at Access Nova Scotia offices or taking them to the MACPASS Service …
