NASA Image Reveals ‘Treacherous Conditions’ Over Oklahoma [Video]

A new satellite image released by the NASA Earth Observatory has captured the dramatic plumes of smoke coming from the wildfires in Oklahoma that have devastated the state since Friday. Over 130 wildfires have been reported across more than three dozen counties, with millions threatened by extreme weather across the region.

The NASA image captured on March 14 using VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) data from the NOAA-21 satellite shows a blanket of dust with smoke plumes seen streaming from the wildfires that blazed several towns in Oklahoma.

These included Camargo, Iconium, Langston, Leedey, Maramec, Merrick, Orlando, Pawhuska and Stillwater. The dust can be seen moving northeast across the state and Texas following a string of thunderstorms.

“Wildfires are really many hazards at once,” Doug Morton, remote sensing scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, said in a statement.

Such dangers, he added, include not only the direct threat to life and property but alo health hazards caused by the smoke and visibility …
