The Native Youth Olympics in Anchorage celebrate Alaska Native culture with traditional games like the scissor kick, showcasing strength and skill.

“Well, these are games to remind us that our people had to be very strong and resilient,” stated Nicole Johnson, with the Native Youth Olympics. 

Kids from all over Alaska come together for the Native Youth Olympics, competing in traditional events like the stick pull, seal hop, and scissor kick. It’s all about skill, culture, and having fun.

“It’s really nice being able to have this experience with them at state. hoping for the best of luck, you know? And for the best of luck for my teammates and safety,” says Theodora Westlake, a player with the Kotzebue team. 

The coaches are equally thrilled, proud to see their athletes compete, connect, and carry on tradition.
