ONEIDA, Wis. (WBAY) – Across the country this week, indigenous people are calling for a response to violence in their communities.

This includes a big crowd from the Oneida Nation, raising awareness as part of the “Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives” walk.

“Throughout Indian country, you know, women go missing. Even men go missing. It’s really kind of put under the rug. There’s not a lot of awareness brought to it,” says Marvin Matchopatow Jr.

Hundreds of people on Saturday walked to do exactly that.

They walked one and a half miles from the Oneida Tribe Civic Center to the Oneida Nation Turtle Elementary School, wearing red and some even with handprints over their mouths.

Those symbolize solidarity and the silenced voices of more than 6,000 American indigenous people who’ve gone missing, according to a report from the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Indian Affairs.
