Almost five kilograms of crystal meth was allegedly seized during a Super Bowl RIDE line checkpoint in Whitby Sunday evening.

Durham Police were conducting a RIDE stop at Consumers Drive and Garden Street in Whitby following the game when a black Volkswagen SUV entered the checkpoint. Police say officers detected an odour of cannabis and conducted a search under the Cannabis Control Act, resulting in the seizure of almost five kilograms of crystal meth.

Adam Persaud, 34, of Oshawa, and Darren Simpson, 31, of Whitby, are both charged with trafficking in crystal meth, while Simpson was also allegedly found with enough cocaine to warrant a second trafficking charge.

A charge of operating a vehicle with cannabis readily available and liquor readily available was also laid.

They were both held for a bail hearing.
