A 50-year-old man died Friday in a head-on collision between a pickup truck and a sanitation truck in south-central Nebraska.

Christopher Herrick of Arapahoe, Nebraska, was pronounced dead at a local hospital, according to a statement from the Furnas County Sheriff’s Office. The driver of the sanitation truck, David Sellstad, 52, was treated at the hospital and released.

Investigators determined that Herrick was driving a 2001 GMC Yukon pickup northbound on U.S. Highway 283 about one-half south of the Arapahoe Golf Course. The pickup crossed the center line and collided with a Schaben Sanitation truck about 4 p.m.

“Sellstad attempted evasive maneuvers by moving to the shoulder, almost completely leaving the roadway but was unable to avoid the collision as Herrick crossed over,” the statement said. “Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.”

Herrick was not wearing a seatbelt, investigators said. Sellstad was using his seatbelt.
