New security measures at Denver hotel shelter after homicides [Video]

For the first time, unarmed security guards are patrolling the property.

DENVER — New security measures are in place following a double homicide at a former hotel that’s now being used to house people experiencing homelessness. 

Denver Police said a man and woman were found dead Saturday in a room at the former DoubleTree hotel at 4040 North Quebec Street. Police are still searching for a suspect in the case.

So far this year, Denver Police have been called out to that shelter 414 times. Now, for the first time, unarmed security guards are patrolling the property.

Mayor Mike Johnston’s office told 9NEWS they’re in the process of installing a badging system with photo ID cards for residents and staff. They’re also adding more surveillance cameras both inside and outside the building.

The mayor’s office said as part of the new safety plan, staff will perform weekly check-ins with each resident at the shelter.
