New Zealand Abuse Report Sparks National Outcry [Video]

In a landmark report, New Zealand’s royal commission revealed a staggering scale of abuse affecting around 200,000 individuals in state and faith-based care institutions from 1950 to 1999. The independent investigation, initiated in 2018, gathered nearly 3,000 testimonies and over one million documents, culminating in a comprehensive 14kg report made public recently. Survivors, including Frances Tagaloa and Keith Wiffin, highlighted the lifelong impact of their experiences, calling the report a significant step toward accountability. The inquiry outlined widespread sexual, physical, and emotional abuse perpetrated by caregivers, religious figures, and social workers. It also noted that many survivors face ongoing challenges, including homelessness and mental health issues. The inquiry’s chair, Coral Shaw, described the findings as a “national disgrace,” emphasising the need for systemic reform. The report includes 95 redress recommendations and calls for a formal apology from the Prime Minister and religious leaders. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon acknowledged the state’s failures and promised a formal apology later this year. This report marks a crucial moment in addressing historical injustices within New Zealand’s care system, but survivors warn that significant change is still required.
