So far only a handful of Liberal and NDP candidates have signed a pledge to correct an “enormous funding shortfall” in Mississauga and Brampton if their parties are elected in the provincial election.

The call to action comes from the Metamorphosis Network, a group of non-profits which has been urging Ontario to plug a $868 million funding gap in community services.

A report last year found the shortfall costs each resident $578 per year in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon, and both Metamorphosis and the Region of Peel are calling on candidates in the upcoming provincial election “to ensure that all community services are properly funded in perpetuity.”

“I recognize that the Province of Ontario underfunds community services in Peel Region,” the pledge reads, adding that signees “support increasing investment in Peel now as a first step to solving this problem,” and “promise to create a table with the province, municipalities, and nonprofits from Peel Region.”
