North Alabama economist weighs in on President Trump’s tariffs | News [Video]

Tariffs imposed on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China could impact Alabama residents.

Dr. Jason Imbrogno, an associate professor of Economics at the University of North Alabama, says President Donald Trump’s imposed tariffs are broad, meaning it could have impacts on prices of a lot of different goods like cars or products in the grocery store. 

Imbrogno says any border states with shipping interests will begin to see differences.

“Stuff could go up in price directly due to these tariffs,” Imbrogno said. 

The professor says the tariffs create an added cost to foreign manufacturers across all goods. Imbrogno says until the U.S. can come to an agreement with China, Canada, and Mexico, we could be seeing complications everywhere. 

“Countries won’t just stand pat, potentially with their tariff policy,” Imbrogno said. 

If other countries retaliate with tariffs of their own, Imbrogno says that could bring added costs to American manufacturers.
