Northern lights could be visible this week in Ontario [Video]

Early risers could see a light show ahead of New Year’s Eve fireworks this year in parts of Ontario.

The northern lights could be visible on Monday and Tuesday in the northern United States, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The Weather Network said it may also be possible to spot the aurora in southwestern Ontario in the early morning hours on Tuesday.

A G3 (strong) geomagnetic storm watch is in place for Dec. 31 due to the anticipated arrival of a coronal mass ejection that left the Sun early on Dec. 29, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration notes on its website.

Coronal mass ejections are massive clouds of charged particles that erupt from the sun’s surface and travel through space. When the particles interact with the planet’s magnetic field, it creates a geomagnetic storm. This storm can produce northern lights.
