Look up, way up at the night sky in southern Ontario this week and you might get a glimpse of the northern lights as a geomagnetic storm hits Earth this week.

Aurora watchers could be in for a light show as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) issued a geomagnetic storm alert for Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

The northern lights form when charged particles from the sun collide with Earth’s upper atmosphere, and the incoming solar weather could make for dazzling displays in the night sky across North America including in southern Ontario.

Data from the NOAA shows there could be high aurora activity in northern Ontario, Quebec and the prairies on Tuesday, while southern Ontario falls in the low aurora likelihood area but will still be within the “viewline” where you might see the aurora borealis.
