The NOAA NWS Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) issued a severe geomagnetic storm alert. What is a geomagnetic storm? A disturbance in Earth’s magnetic field that mildly impacts voltages, satellite operations, and GPS. It also allows the aurora borealis to be seen further south, depending on the intensity of the storm. Will Alabama see the northern lights (aurora borealis)? The SWPC forecasts the aurora not to shine directly over Alabama. However, if you look north, you may be able to see in the distance or along the horizon.
