Northwest Mounted Police Trail Gone But Not Forgotten [Video]

As an important aspect in Canadian history, the Northwest Mounted Police Trail was established when tensions were high following the Cypress Hills Massacre in 1873. The incident resulted in 14 deaths and prompted Ottawa to speed up the formation of the Northwest Mounted Police.  The arrival of this new police force would deal with the concerns over the US Whiskey traders and well as general lawlessness in the region.

In 1960 a group of local volunteers came together and installed over 200 markers to highlight the trail. Over sixty years later, another volunteer group organized by the Saskatchewan History & Folklore Society visits the trail making repairs to the markers.
