Police say stepping up efforts against car thieves and organized crime groups have paid off in Mississauga and Brampton with a steep drop in the number of vehicles stolen so far this year.

Local police have called Mississauga and Brampton the car theft capital of Canada, with Peel Regional Police seeing a record-breaking year in 2023 with more than 7,500 stolen vehicles reported.

But the number of thefts dropped around 16 per cent in 2024 and are down again for 2025, according to new data from Peel police.

Police have seen a 45 per cent decrease in auto thefts so far in 2025 compared to the same period in 2024 – that’s a reduction of some $60 million worth of stolen vehicles, according to PRP Dep. Chief Nick Milinovich.
