Police are urging the public to be cautious after numerous frauds involving prop money have allegedly occurred in the GTA.
A report from York Regional Police from last week (Feb.14) indicates that 14 reported incidents have occurred since October 2024 — all on several established buy-and-sell websites.
Police allege that when meeting with victims, the suspects would only pay with counterfeit Canadian $100 bills.
Police report that, in most recorded incidents, ills were found to have serial numbers GJR6710018 and GJR710022 printed on them.
The words ‘PROP MONEY’ were also located in the window section of each bill.
As a result of this string of alleged incidents, Police are urging the public to be extra cautious when engaging in cash-only transactions, and to:
- Inspect the window to ensure that the numbers in it match the denomination.
- Ensure the portrait in the window matches the main portrait.
