A police officer was seriously injured on Saturday while responding to a disturbance in Fort Erie, located in the Niagara Region, prompting an investigation by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit.

Niagara Regional Police were called to Spears Road North around noon in response to a reported domestic incident. Police have not provided additional details about the circumstances of the call, which was later handed over to the Domestic Violence Unit for further investigation.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., a confrontation is believed to have taken place between the suspect and an officer, leaving the officer with serious injuries. Police have not specified how the injuries were sustained.

The injured officer was transported to an out-of-region hospital and remains stable.
