A man is dead and four other people are in hospital following a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 401 near Cobourg Thursday.

Norhumberland OPP are reporting that a 70-year-old driver from Colborne died after the collision west of Burnham Street (County Road 18), with four others transported to hospital with non life-threatening unjuries.

A narrow band of heavy lake effect snow impacted driving conditions on the stretch of highway east of Oshawa Wednesday morning leading to the crash, which involved tractor-trailers and passenger vehicles.

The westbound lanes of the highway remain closed and diversions are in place while police continue their investigation.

Further updates will be released when available.
