One person has died and another is in unstable condition following a house fire Monday evening.

The city said fire crews were called to the 1400 block of Selkirk Avenue just before 11 p.m. for a two-and-a-half storey duplex fire.

The city said some people were able to get out by themselves, but it was believed one person was still inside.

Firefighters attacked the blaze from inside and were able to find one person. They were transported to hospital in critical condition but later died.

A second person was taken to hospital in unstable condition and crews also found a dead cat.

The fire was under control by 12:15 a.m., and it is under investigation.
