Oneida Nation celebrating 50th annual pow-wow [Video]

ONEIDA, Wis. (WBAY) – A huge celebration of Oneida culture is currently underway.

After years of the U.S. government working to convert Indigenous people into a more European-American lifestyle. This weekend, the Oneida Nation is hosting 50 year celebration since the modern form of pow-wow’s began. It’s all taking place at the Norbert Hill Center.

Friday’s festivities were brought indoors due to the rain, but on Saturday, the sun was out, folks were out, and everybody was having a good time.

The first thing people heard as they walked down to the event was drums, and they saw vibrant colors, delicious food, and a culture that is thriving. Some of the things happening throughout the weekend are dance competitions with over 470 dancers going for the grand prize of over $100,000.
