Ontario city launching Indigenous History Month with cultural celebration [Video]

Oshawa is kicking off Indigenous History Month Saturday with the Indigenous Cultural Celebration, an event that was recognized by Festivals and Events Ontario with three honours in its debut in 2024.

The Indigenous Cultural Celebration, which received awards for Best New Festival, Top 100 Festival and the FEO Impact Award, will take place at Ed Broadbent Waterfront Park from noon to 4 p.m.

The event marks the beginning of Indigenous History Month, celebrating the rich and diverse cultures of the Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island.

The free event will offer a variety of performances and interactive workshops led by First Nations, Inuit and Métis presenters and storytellers. Event highlights include:

  • Family Area: Storytelling, craft making, and interactive activities.
  • Education Area: Water teachings, workshops, and demonstrations.
  • Vendors: A selection of food and merchandise vendors showcasing and selling their creations and artwork.
  • Main Stage: Presentations include hand drumming, traditional dancing, storytelling, and more.
