A vendor has been found to support an Ontario Power Generation (OPG) plan to develop a small modular reactor project in Alberta.
Turner & Townsend has been appointed as prime vendor to help Capital Power and OPG chart the risk management systems, standards and best practices required to develop the grid-scale SMR project in the western province.
OPG is currently building North America’s first fleet of SMRs at its Darlington Nuclear site in Clarington, with the first of four reactors expected to be complete by the end of 2028 and online powering Ontario homes by the end of 2029.
The governments of Alberta, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and New Brunswick jointly released a strategic plan in 2022 for the deployment of SMRs, and the decision to go ahead in Alberta – reached in January 2024 – gives the province a leg up on providing clean energy for its residents.
