Ontario Liberal leader Bonnie Crombie kicked off a provincial tour in Mississauga with strong words for Premier Doug Ford.
Ford hinted at an early election this week indicating the “people should decide” if the province should spend billions to offset possible U.S. tariffs.
“Doug Ford is looking for any excuse to call an early election to get ahead of an RCMP investigation on the Green Belt scandal,” Crombie said at The Crooked Cue in Port Credit on Thursday morning. “This isn’t about Donald Trump. This isn’t about tariffs, and it certainly isn’t about you. This is about him, a selfish, unnecessary election a year and a half before we are supposed to vote in Ontario in June of 2026.”
In 2023, the RCMP launched an investigation into the Greenbelt land swap. Ford has said he has nothing to hide.
Crombie said an early election would cost the province $175 million.
