Ontario Farmers brace commercial losses well into the millions if the U.S. imposes tariffs on Canadian goods tomorrow.
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that tomorrow (April 2), large-scale tariffs on Canadian imports are scheduled to take effect.
Earlier in March, during a brief period in which these tariffs were imposed — in Ontario alone — farmers reported losses of $2.2 million per day in sales, as indicated by the Fruit and Vegetable Growers of Canada (FVGC)
“The impact from the three days of tariffs was immediate. It added costs to our shipments, slowed down the following week’s orders, and created long-term uncertainty on both sides of the border. There are real threats to oversupply of fresh produce in the domestic market, price deterioration, and quality losses which all directly hit growers’ bottom line.” Jan VanderHout of Ontario’s Beverly Greenhouses said in an official statement.
