More acts of hate-motivated graffiti have been found in two locations in Whitby, this time targeting the Muslim community.

“I am deeply saddened and disturbed by the discovery of anti-Muslim graffiti,” said Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy. “Islamophobia and all forms of hate and discrimination are unacceptable and have no place in Whitby.”

Roy said the latest graffiti is part of a “troubling trend” seen across the country, with police-reported hate crimes on the rise in recent years – it was up 32 per cent in 2023 alone, according to data from Statistics Canada.

“These numbers reflect a growing wave of hate-motivated acts in communities of all sizes, targeting people because of their religion, race, identity, or beliefs,” Roy said. “No one in our community should ever feel unsafe or unwelcome because of who they are or how they worship.”
