Significant concerns surrounding mental health fatigue in the health sciences sector are becoming increasingly prevalent in Ontario.

Recent data from MaRS Discovery District — an Ontario-based tech organization — revealed that specialists in Quebec and Ontario who are leaders in STEM-adjacent startups are experiencing dangerously high levels of burnout.

MaRS’s survey found that the dominant conditions tearing through the Ontario health sciences sector are anxiety, stress, burnout, and depression.

According to the data provided, the gender divide among those experiencing workplace ailments is as such:

Burnout:

  • Women (65 per cent)
  • Men (42 per cent)

Depression:

  • Women (24 per cent)
  • Men (34 per cent)

Additional data from MaRS Discovery District noted that the driving forces behind stressors in health sciences are mainly the current financial climate in Canada, expectations in the industry, and personal finances.
