An Ottawa driver kicked off the new year without a vehicle after being stopped for speeding 64 kilometres an hour over the speed limit on Highway 417 in Ottawa.

Ontario Provincial Police say an officer observed a driver going 164 km/h on Highway 417 in Ottawa on New Year’s Eve.

The charge of stunt driving includes an immediate 30-day driver’s licence suspension and the vehicle is impounded for 14 days. Police say upon conviction, the driver faces a minimum $2,000 fine, six demerit points and a one-year driving prohibition.

Police also stopped four drivers for operating a vehicle without insurance on Tuesday night.

The OPP says one of the drivers was stopped after the Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) camera notified the officer that the plate permit was expired.

“The vehicle was not insured,” the OPP said.
