Oregon’s small breweries, wineries fear for futures amid US-Canada trade war [Video]

Whether it’s paying more for canning aluminum, steel for brewing vats or Canada refusing to stock American-made wine, Oregon’s beer and wine industry is suffering.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Across Oregon’s wine, beer and cider industries, there is anguish and a sense of resignation over the new 25% tariff on imported steel and aluminum.

“That could be hundreds of thousands of dollars on my business in a year,” said Aaron Sarnoff-Wood, co-founder of 2 Towns Cider in Corvallis. “This is not a necessary component of doing business.”

Sarnoff-Wood said that’s the additional cost they’re facing for aluminum cans they get from Canada. Because of prepaid material contracts, he said they will have a small buffer, but if tariffs hold, they’ll likely feel the cost increase within about 90 days.

“It’s really upsetting and frankly challenging as a business owner,” said Sarnoff-Wood. “We thrive on stability, and the chaos makes it impossible for us to plan.”
