Ottawa police lay charges against 5 tow truck drivers in compliance blitz [Video]

The Ottawa Police Service says it laid 19 charges against five tow truck drivers during a compliance enforcement operation over the weekend.

Police say compliance checks were conducted to “uphold public safety” and “consumer protection” by ensuring tow truck drivers and companies comply with provincial regulations.

Officers examined compliance for tow truck operators, drivers and vehicle storage facilities. In total, 10 tow truck companies in the city were hit with 17 charges under Ontario’s Towing and Storage Enforcement Act and two charges under the Highway Traffic Act.

Police say key issues included displaying proper information, consent for services and compliance with inspection protocols.

“This enforcement initiative demonstrates our commitment to protecting residents from unlawful practices in the towing industry,” said Ottawa police acting Sgt. Amy Gagnon in a news release.

“We are dedicated to ensuring compliance with regulations that prioritize public safety and accountability.”
