Dennis King knows that when about 50 per cent of your province’s funding comes from federal transfer payments and programs, it’s important to be on Ottawa’s good side.
“You’ve heard me say it time and again that the most important relationship for the premier of Prince Edward Island to have is with the prime minister of Canada,” King said on Monday, reflecting on Justin Trudeau’s decision to resign as prime minister and leader of the federal Liberal Party.
“I think successful premiers in the past have had good, positive working relationships with the prime minister of the day. And I think I would count myself in that.”
King, whose Progressive Conservatives hold a majority government on P.E.I., hopes to have that same positive relationship with Trudeau’s successor, as well as the federal Conservative leader, whose party has a 24-point lead over the Liberals in the latest polling.
