The Pink Moon follows March’s Worm Moon and gets its name not from its colour but from Phlox subulata—a wildflower known as “moss pink” that blooms in early spring. While the name might be misleading, don’t expect a rosy glow; the moon will appear its usual silvery white.
According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the name was used in North America to mark the changing season and the emergence of spring blossoms.
In Christian tradition, it’s also known as the Paschal Moon, as it’s the first full Moon after the spring equinox and is used to set the date of Easter. In Jewish tradition, it’s referred to as the Passover Moon.
