With more than 4,000 Canadians losing their lives to poisoning every year and accidental poisoning killing more people – especially children – than car accidents, National Poison Prevention Week (March 16 to 22) is focused on encouraging people to prevent poisoning before it happens.

Poison Prevention Week is an annual campaign to raise public awareness of poisoning injuries in Canada and encouraging community involvement as part of the solution.

Durham Region’s Health Department believes the message is especially important as over the counter medication is the leading cause of poisoning in children.

“Store medication in the original, child resistant packaging. Child resistant does not mean childproof! Keep medicine locked up, out of sight and reach.”

In 2025, Parachute is joining Organizations across Canada like Parachute.ca are teaming up to promote a pan-Canadian theme for Poison Prevention Week: ‘Awareness saves lives. Prevent poisoning before it happens.’
